Wand Rare Requires Attunement by by a Spellcaster

This wand has 7 charges. While holding it, you can use an action to expend 1 of its charges to cause a thin blue ray to streak from the tip toward a creature you can see within 60 feet of you. The target must succeed on a DC 15 Constitution saving throw or be paralyzed for 1 minute. At the end of each of the target's turns, it can repeat the saving throw, ending the effect on itself on a success. The wand regains 1d6 + 1 expended charges daily at dawn. If you expend the wand's last charge, roll a d20. On a 1, the wand crumbles into ashes and is destroyed.

DM Notes

Encounter Hooks & Tactics

  • A bandit captain wields this wand as their signature weapon — they paralyze the strongest-looking party member first, then demand surrender. The party has to decide: fight without their tank, or negotiate from weakness.
  • The party finds the wand on a petrified wizard's body in a dungeon. The wizard clearly tried to use it on whatever killed them — and failed. What's immune to paralysis and still lurking nearby?
  • A corrupt city guard uses the wand to "arrest" wealthy travelers, paralyzing them and looting their belongings. The guard has connections, so simply killing them creates political problems.

Combat Tactics

This wand is a fight-changer in NPC hands. Target the party member with the lowest CON save (usually the wizard or rogue). A paralyzed creature means auto-crit on melee attacks within 5 feet — pair this with a hard-hitting melee monster for devastating spike damage. As loot, it's powerful but balanced by the DC 15 save and 7 charges. Remind players that paralysis also means auto-fail STR and DEX saves.

Works Well With

Assassin

An assassin with this wand is terrifying: paralyze the target, then attack with auto-crit Sneak Attack. A single round can drop a full-HP character. Use sparingly — this combo can feel unfair.

Gelatinous Cube

A paralyzed creature can't avoid the cube's Engulf. Place the wand-wielder behind the cube in a corridor for a classic dungeon-crawl nightmare.

Specter

Specters deal necrotic damage that reduces max HP. A paralyzed target can't dodge the specter's Life Drain, and the max HP reduction stacks lethally with repeated hits.
