DM Notes

Encounter Hooks & Tactics

  • A drow elite warrior has gone rogue from their house and seeks an alliance with the surface — but their idea of "alliance" involves the party assassinating a rival house's outpost. Trust is a luxury neither side can afford.
  • The party stumbles into a drow patrol in the Underdark. The elite warrior offers safe passage in exchange for a surface-world item: a particular holy symbol from a temple three days' travel away. Refusing means a fight in the dark.
  • A kidnapped noble is being held in a drow outpost. The elite warrior commanding the outpost is willing to trade the hostage for information about a surface military's troop movements — a morally gray negotiation.

Combat Tactics

Drow elite warriors are tactical fighters, not brutes. They open with Darkness on the party's light source (they have Superior Darkvision to 120 ft), then use their two-attack multiattack from the shadows. Position them with 2-3 drow soldiers who use hand crossbows with poison — the elite coordinates the squad. They retreat via secret passages if reduced below half HP, regroup, and ambush again. Never run a single drow elite alone; they always have backup.

Works Well With

Drow

A squad of 3-4 regular drow with hand crossbows (poison, DC 13 CON) provides ranged support while the elite warrior engages in melee. The poison's unconsciousness effect is the real threat.

Giant Spider

Drow use giant spiders as mounts and ambush tools. The spider's web restrains a target, then the elite warrior closes in for advantage on attacks. Classic Underdark combo.

Drow Mage

A drow mage provides battlefield control (Darkness, Faerie Fire, Levitate) while the elite warrior deals damage. The mage stays 60 ft back and drops concentration spells that funnel the party.
