What are Random Encounter Tables?
Random encounter tables let you define a list of possible encounters for a terrain or situation, each with a probability weight. During play, click Roll to randomly select an encounter based on those weights.
Creating a Table
- Go to your campaign → Encounter Tables
- Click New Table
- Enter:
- Name — e.g., "Forest Road Encounters" or "City Night Events"
- Terrain — the environment this table is for
- Description — optional notes about when to use this table
- Click Create
Adding Entries
Each table contains entries — the possible outcomes when you roll.
- Click Add Entry on your table
- Fill in:
- Title — short description (e.g., "Goblin Ambush", "Traveling Merchant")
- Description — details about what happens
- Weight — higher numbers make this entry more likely to be rolled
- Linked Encounter — optionally link to an encounter you've already built, so you can jump straight into combat
- Click Add
The table shows each entry's probability percentage calculated from its weight relative to the total.
Rolling on a Table
Click the Roll button to randomly select an entry. The selection is weighted — entries with higher weights come up more often. The result displays the entry's title, description, and a link to the encounter if one is linked.
Example Setup
A "Forest Road" table might have:
| Entry | Weight | Probability |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens | 10 | 50% |
| Goblin ambush | 4 | 20% |
| Traveling merchant | 3 | 15% |
| Owlbear encounter | 2 | 10% |
| Ancient ruins discovered | 1 | 5% |
Tips
- Link entries to pre-built encounters so you can start combat immediately from a roll result
- Create tables for different terrains: forest, mountain, desert, underdark, urban
- Use the DM Prep PDF export to print your tables for at-the-table reference
