Creating Your First Character

The Character Wizard

Lorekeeper guides you through character creation with a 7-step wizard. You can go back to any previous step to make changes before finalizing.

Step 1: Species

Choose your character's species (Human, Elf, Dwarf, Halfling, etc.). Each species grants unique traits like darkvision, skill proficiencies, or special abilities. Some species have subspecies — for example, choosing Elf lets you pick High Elf, Wood Elf, or Drow.

Tip: Humans get the Versatile trait, which grants an extra Origin feat — giving you more flexibility at level 1.

Step 2: Class

Select your character's class (Fighter, Wizard, Rogue, etc.). Your class determines your hit die, saving throw proficiencies, starting equipment options, and available features. You'll also choose skill proficiencies from your class's skill list.

Step 3: Ability Scores

Assign your six ability scores: Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. Use the standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) or enter custom values. Your background will grant additional Ability Score Increases (ASI) in the next step.

Step 4: Background

Choose a background (Acolyte, Criminal, Sage, etc.). Each background provides:

• Skill proficiencies (2 skills)
• An Origin feat (such as Magic Initiate, Alert, or Skilled)
• Ability Score Increases — choose which scores to boost

Step 5: Equipment

Select your starting weapons and armor from the equipment available to your class. The wizard shows weapon properties, damage dice, and whether you're proficient. You can also choose a shield if your class supports it.

Step 6: Spells (Spellcasters Only)

If your class can cast spells at level 1, you'll select your starting cantrips and prepared spells. The available spells are filtered to those appropriate for your class and level. This step is automatically skipped for non-spellcasting classes.

Step 7: Details

Add the finishing touches:

• Name — your character's name
• Portrait — upload an image (auto-optimized to WebP)
• Alignment — Lawful Good, Chaotic Neutral, etc.
• Backstory — your character's history
• Personality traits, ideals, bonds, and flaws
• Physical details — age, height, weight, eye color, hair, skin, faith

Click Create Character to finalize. You'll be taken to your character sheet.
