Character Templates

What Are Character Templates?

Character templates are pre-built characters ready to play or customize. Each template includes a full backstory, personality traits, ability scores, skill proficiencies, and class/species/background selections. Pick one, give it a name, and you have a playable character in seconds.

Finding Templates

1. Go to Characters and click Templates in the header
2. Or from the Dashboard, click "or use a template" under the New Character card

Browsing & Filtering

The template index page lets you search and filter:

• Search — type a name, class, species, or setting to filter
• Setting pills — filter by campaign setting (Forgotten Realms, Greyhawk, Ravenloft, etc.) or show standalone characters
• Tier pills — filter by Free, Adventurer, or Dungeon Master tier

What's Included

Each character template comes with:

• Species & Class — fully configured with subclass selection
• Background — with appropriate skill proficiencies
• Ability Scores — optimized for the class and build
• Skill Proficiencies — selected to match the character concept
• Backstory — a rich 3-5 sentence narrative tying the character to their setting
• Personality — trait, ideal, bond, and flaw
• Appearance — physical description including gender, age, height, weight, and distinguishing features

Using a Template

1. Click Preview on any template to read the full character details
2. Scroll to the bottom and enter a character name (defaults to the template's name)
3. Click Create Character — the character is created with all stats, skills, and backstory filled in
4. Edit anything you like from the character sheet — all fields are fully editable

Campaign-Linked Characters

Many character templates are designed for specific campaign settings. On campaign template preview pages, you'll see a Recommended Characters section listing characters that fit that campaign. These same characters appear in the character template index with a setting badge showing which campaign they belong to.

Tier Access

Character template tiers match their parent campaign template:

• Free — starter characters for getting into the action quickly
• Adventurer — characters for popular settings and classic adventures
• Dungeon Master — the full collection including exotic builds and niche settings

Personal Templates

In addition to the official pre-built templates, you can save your own characters as reusable templates:

1. Go to any character's show page
2. In the Character Management section, find Save as Template
3. Give it a name and click Save

Your personal templates appear under Characters → My Builds and can be used to quickly recreate character builds for new campaigns.
